LEED- Energy Complex- Thailand

The Energy Complex in Thailand, the first office complex in Southeast Asia to receive LEED Platinum certification, installed Vulcan S250 and X-PRO 1 units on their condenser water system. Within 4 months, they eliminated 330 lbs of monthly scale buildup, reduced chiller approach temperatures, and improved overall energy performance.

About the Energy Complex (EnCo)

The Energy Complex (EnCo) in Thailand was initiated by PTT Public Company Limited (PTT) and PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) as a project to consolidate office buildings for PTT affiliates, energy-related companies, and the Ministry of Energy. The goal: save time in business communication and boost operating efficiency.

This landmark complex has been awarded the highest level of Platinum Green Building Certification from LEED (Leadership of Energy and Environmental Design)—making it the first office complex in Thailand and all of Southeast Asia to achieve this prestigious certification. The Energy Complex serves as the prototypical building in Thailand for energy conservation, harmonious coexistence of industry and the environment, and optimal utilization of resources.

The Challenge: Ozone Treatment Couldn't Stop 330 Lbs of Monthly Scale

Even with LEED Platinum certification and advanced water treatment, the Energy Complex faced a persistent problem:

  • Ozone System Ineffective: Before installing Vulcan, the building used an ozone water system to treat the condenser. It could not effectively treat or manage scaling.

  • Massive Scale Accumulation: Maintenance crews observed massive scale particles in the basin of the cooling towers.

  • Every month, scale was collected from the basin and consistently weighed about 330 Lbs (150 kg).

For a building designed to be the prototype of energy efficiency, this scale buildup was directly impacting chiller performance and energy consumption—undermining their LEED Platinum mission.

All 7 cooling towers were treated with Vulcan

Results: 4 Months After Installation

Before Vulcan

  • Ozone system ineffective against scale

  • 330 lbs (150 kg) of scale removed from basins monthly

  • Higher approach temperatures on chillers

  • Increased energy consumption

After 4 Months with Vulcan

  • Significant mineral scale reduction in cooling tower basins

  • Approach temperatures of chillers reduced

  • Lower energy consumption

  • Improved overall chiller performance

First in Southeast Asia: LEED Platinum Certification

The Energy Complex is the first office complex in Thailand and Southeast Asia to be awarded the highest level of Platinum Green Building Certification from LEED. This prestigious recognition honors their commitment to energy conservation, harmonious coexistence of industry and the environment, and optimal utilization of resources. Vulcan technology now supports that mission by ensuring their cooling systems operate at peak efficiency.

Protecting Southeast Asia's First LEED Platinum Building

The Energy Complex represents the highest standard of sustainable building design in Southeast Asia. When their advanced ozone treatment system couldn't stop 330 lbs of monthly scale from undermining their efficiency, Vulcan delivered the missing piece. Within 4 months, scale was significantly reduced, chiller performance improved, and energy consumption dropped—proving that even the greenest buildings need comprehensive scale prevention.
