Filtration media Adsorbent

Activated Carbon Ceramic Balls are ceramic balls that contain activated carbon.

  • Made of: Ceramic with activated carbon mixed in

  • Form: Balls

  • Main job: Marketed for reducing residual chlorine; used as a supporting layer

  • Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight

What it does

The carbon inside the balls can react with free chlorine and hold some organic chemicals. Because the carbon is set in ceramic, we expect less effect per layer than from loose carbon granules; this has not been measured.

  • Residual chlorine: this type of ball is marketed for removing residual chlorine; we have found no independent test

  • Hard and low-dust: suppliers of this type of ball describe them as hard and say they do not shed powder

  • Not claimed: heavy-metal reduction, or any of the energy or 'activated water' effects some sellers advertise for these balls

Evidence: limited Independent evidence for these balls is limited. Chlorine reduction by activated carbon is well documented, but we have found no test of how much chlorine these balls reduce, so use them as a minor layer, not a replacement for granular carbon.

Where it goes in your filter

Use them as a supporting layer, not as the main carbon stage.

  • Layer position: Anywhere in the stack as a supporting layer

  • Pairs well with: A main carbon layer such as Jacobi AquaSorb CS or CX-MCA

  • Keep in mind: Not a substitute for granular carbon; keep fine media such as 30–60 mesh carbon away from them, or the grains can wash into the gaps

Handling & care

  • Before first use: Rinse with clean water until it runs clear

  • Storage: Keep sealed and dry, away from odours and chemicals

  • Replacement: Replace them with the cartridge on its planned schedule; we have no service-life figure for these balls

Common questions

Can they replace granular carbon?

No. The carbon is set in ceramic and there is no test data behind these balls. Use them alongside a granular carbon layer.

Do they remove heavy metals?

We do not claim that. Some sellers of this type of ball do, but we have found no evidence for it. For lead, use a lead-reduction medium.

Is this medium certified?

No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.

How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.

Summary

Activated Carbon Ceramic Balls are ceramic balls with activated carbon mixed in, marketed for reducing residual chlorine. Because the carbon is locked inside ceramic we expect a smaller effect than from loose carbon granules, and we have found no independent test of these balls. Use them as a supporting layer next to granular carbon.
