Filtration media Adsorbent

Jacobi AquaSorb CX-MCA (12–40 mesh) is a catalytic granular activated carbon made by Jacobi Carbons from coconut shell and activated with steam.

  • Made of: Steam-activated coconut-shell carbon with catalytic activity

  • Form: Black granules, 12–40 mesh (1.70–0.425 mm)

  • Main job: Breaks down chloramine; also reduces chlorine and adsorbs organic chemicals

  • Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight

What it does

Catalytic carbon breaks down chloramine, the disinfectant many water utilities use instead of chlorine, faster than ordinary carbon. Like other coconut-shell carbons, it also reduces free chlorine and adsorbs organic chemicals.

  • Breaks down chloramine: the Water Quality Association gives about 5 minutes of contact for catalytic carbon, while ordinary carbon can need 10 minutes or more; Jacobi describes this grade as highly effective for chloramines and hydrogen sulfide

  • Reduces free chlorine: Jacobi lists a typical dechlorination half-length of 3.1 cm for this size under its own test method

  • Adsorbs organic chemicals: Jacobi lists a high capacity for chloroform and other trihalomethanes (THMs)

  • By-products: breaking down chloramine releases some ammonia and chloride into the water, as the Water Quality Association notes

Evidence: well established Chloramine breakdown by activated carbon, and the shorter contact time catalytic carbon needs, are documented by the Water Quality Association. It cites about five minutes of contact, and a small cartridge gives seconds, so chloramine reduction in a cartridge is partial and depends on flow.

Where it goes in your filter

Give it as many layers as the cartridge allows, ahead of any layer that chloramine could damage.

  • Layer position: After any KDF layer; before ion-exchange resins, calcite and the outlet pad

  • Pairs well with: Jacobi AquaSorb CS for extra chlorine and chemical capacity; ion-exchange resin after it, since chloramine can damage ion-exchange resins

  • Keep in mind: More layers and a slower flow give more chloramine reduction; it is not a PFAS, lead, nitrate or fluoride medium

Handling & care

  • Before first use: Pour gently to keep dust down, then rinse with clean cold water until it runs clear; Jacobi gives a typical pH of 10 for this carbon, so the water can have a raised pH for a while after installation

  • Storage: Keep sealed and dry in the original bag, away from solvents and strong oxidisers; wet carbon draws oxygen from the air, so store it in a well-ventilated place

  • Replacement: Replace it with the cartridge on its planned schedule, not only when the taste changes

Common questions

Do I need it if my water is chlorinated, not chloraminated?

Not necessarily. Jacobi's datasheets give ordinary coconut-shell carbon such as Jacobi AquaSorb CS a shorter dechlorination half-length (2.2 cm against 3.1 cm), so it reduces free chlorine faster per layer. Your water utility's annual water quality report usually says which disinfectant it uses.

Will it remove all the chloramine?

Not in a small cartridge. Expect a partial reduction that grows with more layers and a slower flow.

Can I use it to prepare aquarium water?

Not on its own. Breaking down chloramine releases some ammonia, which matters for fish, so aquarium water needs a further step to remove it after this layer.

Is this medium certified?

No certification is claimed for this product. NSF lists Jacobi Carbons' AquaSorb CX-MCA under NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 (material safety) as a process medium for public water systems, made at named Jacobi plants, noting that it has not been evaluated for point-of-use applications, and we have not yet confirmed that our stock comes from a listed plant. Complete filter systems, not loose media, are certified for performance to NSF/ANSI 42 or 53.

How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.
