Filtration media Ion exchange

Improved Ion Exchange Ceramic Balls are ceramic balls sold as an ion-exchange medium, meant to swap some dissolved ions in the water for others; their recipe has not been published.

  • Made of: Ion-exchange ceramic, per the product name; exact make-up not yet confirmed

  • Form: Ceramic balls

  • Main job: Supporting layer; balls of this kind are marketed for softening and taste

  • Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight

What it does

Ion-exchange minerals such as zeolite hold loosely bound ions that they can trade for others in the water, such as calcium or some metals. How much a ball can take up depends on its recipe, which has not been published for this product.

  • Marketed for: water softening and better taste, in claims made for similar balls

  • Capacity: not published; a cartridge layer is not regenerated, so any effect stops when its capacity is used up

  • Not a substitute: for hardness, fluoride or metals, choose a medium made and tested for that job

Evidence: limited Zeolite-type minerals are proven ion exchangers in lab studies, but we have found no test data for this product, so we make no reduction claim.

Where it goes in your filter

With no published capacity, this medium works best as a minor supporting layer after the chlorine has been removed.

  • Layer position: Middle of the cartridge, after the dechlorination layer

  • Pairs well with: Chlorine Ceramic Balls or KDF-55 before it; activated carbon

  • Keep in mind: Don't count on it to soften hard water or to reduce any contaminant

Common questions

Will it soften my water?

Not in any lasting way. A small ion-exchange layer can take up a little calcium and magnesium until its capacity is used up, and a cartridge layer is not regenerated the way a softener is. For hard water, use a water softener or a scale-inhibiting medium.

Does it remove fluoride?

We make no fluoride claim for this product. Similar balls are sometimes marketed for fluoride removal, but we have not seen a test with stated conditions. For fluoride, use Activated Alumina Ceramic Ball or Fluoride Ceramic Balls.

Is this medium certified?

No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.

How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.
