Filtration media Ion exchange

Zeolite Ceramic Balls are made from zeolite, a porous natural mineral that exchanges ions, formed into balls and fired.

  • Made of: Natural zeolite (typically clinoptilolite), fired into ceramic balls

  • Form: Ceramic balls

  • Main job: Exchanges some dissolved metal ions and ammonium

  • Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight

What it does

Zeolite's crystal framework carries a negative charge, balanced by loosely held ions such as sodium, potassium and calcium. It can trade these for other positive ions in the water.

  • Takes up some metal ions: natural zeolite exchanges lead, cadmium, copper and barium in lab studies

  • Takes up ammonium: the classic use of natural zeolite in water treatment

  • Hardness: calcium and magnesium sit near the bottom of its preference order, so it is no substitute for softener resin

  • Not for anions: fluoride, arsenic and nitrate pass through

Evidence: well established Ion exchange on natural zeolite is well documented in peer-reviewed studies. Those studies used raw zeolite; fired balls also contain binder, and their capacity has not been published.

Where it goes in your filter

Place it in the middle of the cartridge, after any dechlorination layer, as a second stage for dissolved metals.

  • Layer position: Middle of the cartridge, after the dechlorination layer

  • Pairs well with: Lead-reduction media or cation resin as the main metals layer; activated carbon

  • Keep in mind: It releases small amounts of sodium, potassium or calcium in exchange

Handling & care

  • Before first use: Pour gently or wear a dust mask, then rinse until the water runs clear

  • Storage: Keep sealed and dry, away from odours and chemicals

  • Replacement: A cartridge layer cannot be regenerated; replace it with the rest of the cartridge

Common questions

Will it soften my water?

Only slightly and briefly. Its capacity for calcium and magnesium is modest, and a cartridge layer cannot be regenerated. Use a softener resin if hardness is the problem.

Does it remove fluoride or arsenic?

No. Zeolite's framework is negatively charged, so it exchanges only positive ions. For fluoride or arsenic, use Activated Alumina Ceramic Ball, Fluoride Ceramic Balls or Arsenic Ceramic Balls.

Is this medium certified?

No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.

How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.

Summary

Fired zeolite balls: a natural ion-exchange mineral that can take up some dissolved metal ions, such as lead, cadmium and copper, and ammonium. Use it as a supporting layer after dechlorination; it does nothing for fluoride, arsenic or nitrate.
